Grid Drawing (from black and white photo)

Step 1: You will need to print a good, clear picture.  I find that if there are filters it washes out the values and does not print well.

Once you print the picture, you will put a grid on your drawing.  I used a 1.5 inch grid, only because my ruler's width was 1.5 inches.  Any grid size from 1-2 inches would work fine.

Side note: If you are doing this on your own, you can take a photo and get an app on your phone to add a grid on top of a picture.

Step 2: You will then need to decide how much bigger to make your drawing (or the same size) I chose 3 inch squares, which makes my drawing twice as big.  Be sure to get rid of the extra paper to eliminate confustion.

Step 3: Shade, using any materials you choose (much like the mystery grid).  DRAW UPSIDE DOWN ROW BY ROW!  Upside down will keep you drawing what you see rather than trying to make it look like a nose, eye, or mouth, rather you will really study the image.

Once I finished I didn't like the drawing, it was very choppy and I could see the grid lines.  I worked it some with a q-tip and tried to smooth it some.  Truth be told I rushed too much and was unhappy, I am better at shading with crayons and I like color in artwork so much more than just pencil, so I went back and redid the drawing, took my time and smoothed out my marks more. Then once I finished I thought it wasn't dark enough in the darkest areas so I went back in and added some black.
