Mosaic

I want you to browse some mosaic artworks.  Mosaic is many pieces put together to make a design.  It could be many ceramic tiles (traditionally), many magazine pieces, buttons, etc.  The different colors unified brings a very complex variety.  My assignment will be to draw your choice of a cartoon character then you will basically cut magazine colors to "color" the cartoon.  It will be bright and expressive!  Look through some of the attached pictures of artwork to grasp what it is and get some ideas for your own work.

Save a picture of the cartoon of your choice.  It is easier, but not required to pick one that has a bold outline like the Donald Duck image I attached.  If you want to do an image that is not a cartoon, that is okay but work at your own skill level.

First steps is to draw your image.  This can be with a pencil or marker, really anything is fine.  All of the paper, even the white areas will be covered with the mosaic.  If you struggle with drawing out the image and need help, I made a video that will give you the steps you need to take to draw it easier.

If you have a square image rather than rectangular you can cut your paper to be square.

Once you have completely drawn your image out I will provide instructions soon on how to begin with your mosaic!  Stay tuned!

Click the video below to see how to grid your paper and computer image so that it is easier to draw.

The video below shows you how to add the color.  You will cut small pieces of magazine paper to glue to your artwork.  I like to use mod podge and a brush to apply the magazine paper.  I like to cut mine onto a piece of white paper and dip the end of my paint brush in glue to transfer it from the paper to the artwork.  If you have white areas you should also cover it in white magazine bits.
