Portrait Drawing
(Self-Portrait)
Level 1
This lesson will teach you how to a face using proportion, placement, shape, and shading. The goal is to draw a portrait that really looks like the subject.
Time:
2-3 class periods
Materials for this lesson include the following:
Photo (bust - shoulders up, full face showing)
drawing paper
Pencil
Eraser
STEP 1: Take a photo of yourself, the photo should not have filters and should be a straight on view of your entire face, shoulders up. This pose is called a bust in art. This photo should just you and should be a current photo. This is for practice/exercise.

STEP 2: Draw the head shape - It should take up most of the center of your paper, Head shape is oval, usually wider at the top. Imagine an egg shape that is upside down.
STEP 3: draw two guidelines, one vertical line down the middle of the face and one horizontal across about the middle of the head shape. The eyes will be drawn on the line going across the head shape (the horizontal line).
Draw the rest of your portrait following the steps in the two videos. Watch BOTH videos.
Assignment:
1. Draw your self-portrait, it should be completed and should resemble your photo. Include your clothing, neck, hair, and any other features that are in your photo.
2. Upload your self-portrait drawing to artsonia under "self-portrait".
